Volther trained as a cabinetmaker, studied and later taught at the prestigious Royal Danish Academy School of Design. He moved in the same spheres as some of the most infuential names in Danish Modernism, his friends including Hans Wegner and Borge Mogensen. In his early years as Director of Design at FDB (Danish Cooperative of Furniture Makers), he designed for many manufacturers in a typical mid-century style using quality woods and joinery techniques. In the early 1960s, he left FDB to collaborate with Erik Jørgensen, where he began to experiment with different materials. His designs took on a more futuristic feel, best illustrated by the famous “Corona” chair.
