About Us
Hide and Teak was established by design enthusiasts who collect vintage furniture for their own homes. Something that starting as a hobby has become an obsession. We enjoy the process of sourcing underutilised, iconic furniture and finding it a new, more appreciative owner. We carry a large stock of products aiming, not only to provide a broader choice than most of our competitors, but also to create a website that is interesting to navigate.
Mental Balm
We are advocates of the benefits attributed to good design. Furnishing our homes thoughtfully can evoke positive emotional responses as well as reduce levels of stress. The understanding of this psychology is well established, dating back thousands of years to the Chinese concept of Feng Shui.
We have a specialist knowledge of Mid-century Modernism, a movement that shared the ethos that simple spaces facilitate a better mood. These designs originally signified post-war optimism and are characterised by clean lines and organic shapes. This furniture works well in creating the perception of space, their muted tones welcome natural light and their sculptural forms have tactile qualities. Of course, the ability to have calming cognitive effects are not limited to furnishings of this period and we also stock more contemporary items that meet our criteria.
Quality always sells
At Hide and Teak, we only stock items we would have in our own homes. They must pass stringent quality control checks and items we acquire that do not meet our standards are sold on via public auctions, not through our website.
We stay away from commonly used words like “rare” and prefer the aesthetics of our products to speak for themselves. After all, Mid-century Modern furniture was intended for mass production so rare items may just be poor designs! We believe the techniques and materials used in the manufacture of this furniture are far superior to those used in the production of most modern furniture. The continued functional form of items that are nearly 70 years old is testament to this.
All our items are authentic. We do not stock reproductions. When you order from Hide and Teak, we like to think that you are not simply making a purchase, but also acquiring a work of art.
Teal is close to Green
At Hide and Teak we love the positive environmental effects of our business. After all, trading used, collectable furniture is just a sophisticated form of recycling. With their timeless design, these items are set to remain desirable and away from landfill for years to come.
We are conscious of the carbon footprint transporting our furniture and reduce the number of journeys as much as possible by combing collections/deliveries. Our work is ongoing to try to find greener delivery alternatives within the freight industry.
