Kastholm was originally an interior designer. He turned his focus to furniture design after studying in the United States during the 1950s. Influenced by the emerging popularity in “minimalism”, he particularly admired the simplicity demonstrated by Charles Eames’ furniture. His best-known designs are from 1961-1968 whilst collaborating with his friend and cabinet maker, Preben Fabricius. Many of these chairs have achieved “iconic” status and are typified using simple steel frames with sculpted seats, upholstered in leather.
