Great-Great-Great Grandson of John Harris Heal, founder of the famous Heal’s furniture store in London, Robert Heal studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and later taught at the Royal College of Art. He served as Design Director for the family business from 1952-1975. However, he is best known for his design of “Ladderax” furniture, commissioned by Staples in 1964. This pioneering, modular system brought mass produced, affordable, Scandinavian influenced design to the masses in the UK.
