Soft Furnishing Policy

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010) set levels of fire resistance for domestic upholstered furniture, furnishings and other products containing upholstery.  It states that soft furnishings must conform to BS 5852.

The following exemptions apply;

  • Items constructed before 1950.
  • Items sold to someone in the business of dealing in furniture.
  • Items sold to someone in the business of reupholstering furniture.
  • Items sold for a non-domestic UK setting (this includes items for export, museums and works of art).

At Hide and Teak we only use professional Upholsterers.  The workmanship and the materials used in our reupholstery process conform to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988.  However, our goods that contain original upholstery (or have been reupholstered by a third party) may not comply with the Regulations and are sold under this policy.  We endeavour to make this clear on the relevant product pages.

Goods sold under this policy are sold as works of art.  They must be re-upholstered to conform to BS 5852 prior to use in a UK domestic dwelling.  Unless you are exempt as outlined above, by making your order, you agree your understanding of such and will not use the Goods for this purpose until they conform to BS 5852.
